The Wamphyri Prefecture
The prefect of the Wamphyri region is actually a mortal ( thrall ), Ragara Nova. He had a reputation as a weasel and a fop. He was appointed to the prefecture five years ago both as a slap in the face and as the means to give the human world a mask in which the actual rulers of this region could hide behind. The region was not seen as the plum assignment in those days, and a prefecture generally carried a lot of responsibility with it.
The plan has worked almost too well. The city, which was built around the Cathedral, now turned into an Aerie, where the Knights Ex Inferis have based themselves, is a port city and a strong military town. It lies on the northeastern borders of the Realms, not far from the frozen north, and many troops and military ships move through the port. It is a rugged place with comparitively few creature comforts, and some of the troops were not afraid to show what they thought of this fop in charge ( Ragara ). Nova quickly learned he would have to shape up if he wanted to earn the respect from the Wamphyri Lords and Ladies ( those in residence and those just passing through ). In doing so, he has displayed something that no one expected...a keen grasp of military strategy and the attending Wamphyri politics. He has also developed something of a friendship with Malagen Rathe, the Quartermaster of the Knights.
The slaves of the region oddly combine the grim aspect of men on their way to a battle they may not return from, with the kind of hard partying that only off-duty troops indulge in. There's a brothel on almost every block in the city, usually sandwiched in between two taverns.
other than services for the military, the city of the region produce mostly mined goods such as marble, gemstones and some substances used by magic users. The city also mine ore and other metals and work it into useable shapes, resulting in heavy, choking air and hopelessly polluted water supplies. The entire area is more gray than green. The city have developed a pattern of situating the mines deep in the hills, putting the city itself off to the side, and building any processing equipment downstream from there. Between illness and overwork, the lifespans of the slaves ( human and sub-human ) in this city is often short.
